Soccer Earns Split at Bethel

09/03 Mens Soccer, Womens Soccer

The Storm soccer teams traveled the hour to nearby Bethel University on Tuesday afternoon and drove away with a split.

The women started the high scoring afternoon off in the 6th minute of the game as freshman Miranda Baltzer put the ball in the back of the net, the first of her season and career.  Junior Steph Lally tallied the assist.  However, it was all Royals for the rest of the game as the Storm did not even get a shot off in the second half, as Bethel came away with the 3-1 win.  Storm junior goalie, Carrie Meyer posted eight saves for the afternoon.

In the second game, the Storm and the Royals remained deadlocked until the 39th minute when Kyle Brubaker broke free and beat his defender for his first goal of the season.  The score remained that way until early in the second half when freshman Jon Shultz netted the first goal of his career for the Storm in the 54th minute.  In the 59th minute, Bethel posted their first goal of the game, but the Storm's Shultz added another goal in the 63rd minute, assisted by Erick Langmaack to give the Storm a 3-1 lead.  In the 77th minute, Storm freshman Brady Griffith put in his first career goal, which would also prove to be the game winner off a pass from sophomore Mark Jensen.  Bethel tried to mount a comeback, but fell short as the score ended 4-3.  Goalie Jay Clementson tallied eight saves for the evening.

The women are now set to enjoy a 15 day layoff, while the men have a 10 day layoff.  The men next host Nebraska Wesleyan University at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 13.  The women do not return to action until they travel to Northland on Friday, September 19 for their conference opener at 2:00 PM with the men to follow at 4:00 PM.
