Storm Continue to Surprise Win Second Straight Conference Game

12/07 Mens Basketball

Saint Bonifacius, Minn - The Storm men's basketball team continues to surprise their conference foes.  After a thrilling one point victory with 1.4 seconds left on Friday night to secure their first victory of the season the Storm took on last seasons UMAC post-season champion The College of St. Scholastica on Saturday at Wild Athletic Center.  After a sluggish and sloppy start by both teams the score would be 12-11 in favor of St. Scholastica with 14:40 left in the first half.  The Storm would get a big three point shot from freshman guard Taylor Jones and go on an 12-0 run to recapture the lead at 23-12 and extending the lead to 13 at 31-18 with just under 8 minutes to go in the first half taking the same margin into the locker room at halftime leading 41-28.

The Storm came out of the half and extended the lead to 15 points before a Saints push brought them as close as two points at 47-45 with 14 minutes to play in the second half.  The Storm would get a lead as big as 6 before the game would stay between 2 and 4 points the rest of the way.  The Saints would go ahead for the first time since the early minutes of the game with 1:25 to go in the contest but after a Crown timeout the Storm's Jake Jarvis would get fouled on a drive to the basket and hit both free throws to tie the score at 65-65 with 1:05 to go.  The Saints would take a three point shot as the shot clock was running down and the miss would be rebounded by Mike Landers and the final timeout for the Storm would give them one last shot before the end of the game.  With the score knotted at 65-65 and :22 seconds on the clock the Storm would again design a late game play to get the ball into the hands of the hottest player of the game Mike Landers who had 17 points on the game.  On a driving to the basket the lay up attempt with one second on the clock would rim out but Friday's hero would be there again as junior Maurice Lloyd would tip in the missed lay up as time expired giving the Storm the victory 67-65.  Mike Landers would lead Crown with 17 points and be helped by Taylor Jones 14 points including 3-5 from 3's and two additional players with 12 points apiece in Maurice Lloyd and Jake Jarvis.

With the victory the Storm improved to 2-0 in conference play and 2-6 overall.  The Storm are next in action at home on Thursday evening when they take on Bethel University at 7:30 p.m.  Join the Storm on Friday night as they induct former players and coaches of the Crown basketball into the first class of the Ring of Honor at halftime of the game between Simpson College and Crown College beginning at 7:30 p.m.
