Storm Runners Show Strong Effort at Crown Invitational

10/20 Cross Country

Several Storm runners surged forward with personal best times at their own invitational held at Crown on Saturday, October 18. Six colleges joined the Crown cross country team in action. Concordia Moorhead won both the men's and women's team titles. Other teams included UW-Superior, Minnesota-Morris, St. Scholastica, North Central University (MN), and Presentation College (SD).

The individual winners were Tom Sederquist from Concordia Moorhead who finished the men's 8K course in a time of 26:17 and Hailey Brenden, also from Concordia Moorhead, who completed the women's 6K course in 22:54. Both marks are records on the hilly and difficult course.

The top Crown runner for the men was Seth Brickley who finished in the runner-up position to Sederquist recording an 8K time of 26:50. The Storm's first women finisher was freshman, Erika Stamfl in 27th place with a 6K time of 27:47.

Other Storm men competitors were Gatjeak Gew (31st in 31:52), Kyle Pitts (33rd in 32:15), Nat Sahlstrom (34th in 32:41), and Jon Lord (40th in 34:15). Women finishers for the Storm were Shauna Palmer (30th in 28:13), Hannah Dean (33rd in 29:07), Cherie Hecimovich (36th in 29:44), Kelsey Morrow (39th in 30:25), Megan Kunde (40th in 32:27), Keren Dyvig (41st in 33:36), and Kristen Kalvig 56th in 33:42).

"It was a strong day of improvement for our runners on a difficult course," said coach Rick Peterson. We spent this past week working on a huge hill, aptly named cemetery hill in Waconia. It paid off as everyone ran well and most of our runners set new personal best times. Seth (Brickley) is running with strength and confidence, and will be competing for a conference championship. Hannah (Dean), Keren (Dyvig), and Kristen (Kalvig) all made huge improvements on their previous best times. It was exciting to see Cherie (Hecimovich) move under the 30:00 mark for the first time."

The Storm men and women runners next compete on Saturday, November 1 at the UMAC Conference Championships to be held at UM-Morris.
