Volleyball Finishes on High Note
Duluth, Minn - The Crown College volleyball team played it's final three matches of the 2009 season on the road and were still in search of their first conference win of the season. Unfortunately for the Storm they faced two teams preparing for the UMAC playoffs as they took on The College of St. Scholastica on Friday night in Duluth before traveling to Ashland, Wisconsin to take on the Northland College Lumber Jills on Saturday.
On Friday night the Saints from St. Scholastica easily defeated the Storm in three sets (12-25, 5-25, 13-25) dropping the Storm to 4-25 overall and 0-13 in conference play.
On Saturday the Storm would participate in a Triad with their first match against Northland College to finish out the UMAC schedule. With the score knotted at 8-8 the Lumber Jills would outscore the Storm 7-1 to build a 15-9 lead and go on to win the first set 25-17. The Storm would battle in the second set closing the gap to 24-20 before falling 25-21 with the Lumber Jills taking a commanding 2 sets to 0 lead. The third and deciding set would be won by Northland 25-15. The Storm would drop to 4-26 overall and would end the 2009 season without a conference victory finishing at 0-14.
The second match of the day pitted the Storm against non-conference opponent Finlandia University. Crown would win the first set 25-16 with a great start leading 12-1. The second set would be much closer but the Storm would find a way to pull out the victory 25-22 taking a 2 sets to 0 lead. Finlandia would not go down without a fight winning the third set 25-22 before the Storm would take the fourth and final set 25-18 to win their final match of the 2009 season.
With the victory the Storm improve to 5-26 overall on the season. Sophomore Naomi Anderson and freshman Ashleigh Trosen would lead the way with 11 and 13 kills and Laura Plowman would contribute with 10 kills for the Storm.
