West Coast Not Kind to Storm
Portland, Ore - The Crown College Storm traveled to Lewis and Clark College on Saturday October 24th and were greeted by wonderful weather a very nice facility and a football opponent that was hungry for a victory.
The Storm got off to a quick start as Adam Hayes connected with tightend Callan McKinley on a 15 yard touchdown pass completing a 13 play 55 yard scoring drive that took a little over 6 minutes off the clock and gave the Storm an early 7-0 advantage.
The Pioneers would respond quickly scoring on a 46 yard pass play on the very first possession and pulling even with the Storm at 7-7. Not to be outdone the Storm would fire a 62 yard strike from Hayes to wideout Robert Yang putting Crown College up 14-7. In a combined 21 seconds both teams were able to score 14 points in what would prove to be a very active first quarter.
The Pioneers would take the next possession and drive 59 yards on 6 plays finishing with a rush of 16 yards by quarterback Tucker Laurence knotting the score at 14-14 with just over five minutes still to play in the first quarter.
The Storm offense would continue to pile up staggering first quarter numbers as they would drive 59 yards on 9 plays and Hayes and Mckinley would connect on their second touchdown pass play of the first quarter a 7-yard strike putting the Storm up yet again 21-14 with just over a minute left in the first quarter.
Lewis and Clark would take the first possession of the second quarter to the Crown 11 yard line before settling for a field goal attempt by senior kicker Andrew Foote an attempt that would sail through the uprights cutting the Storm lead to 21-17.
The Pioneer defense would finally stop the Storm on the next possession forcing a Kyle Knox punt his first of the day and setting up the Pioneers for another scoring drive. The Storm defense would hold firm as the Pioneers would drive the ball to the Crown 10 yard line but be forced to settle for their second consecutive field goal a 27 yard attempt that was good for Foote and putting the Pioneers within 1 point at 21-20.
The Lewis and Clark defense would come up big on the first play of the next drive by the Storm intercepting Hayes the Pioneers 25 yard line. The Pioneers would take advantage of this costly turnover by the Storm to take the lead driving the ball 75 yards on just 3 plays as quarterback Tucker Laurence would rush 67 yards for the score giving Lewis and Clark the lead 27-21. On the very next possession Hayes was again intercepted this time at the Crown 43 turning the ball over to the Pioneers with great starting field position. The Storm defense would force a 42 yard field goal attempt by Foote which was good and extending the Pioneer lead to 30-21.
The Storm offense would recover on the next possession and Hayes would lead Crown on a 7 play 67 yard scoring drive ending in a 1 yard rush from Hayes and cutting the Lewis and Clark lead to 30-28 with 22 seconds remaining in the first half. The senior kicker for the Pioneers would again come up big hitting his fourth field goal of the first half just as time expired ending the half with the score Lewis and Clark 33 Crown 28.
Having elected to receive the Storm would kick off to the Pioneers to start the second half and Foote would start the second half in similar fashion to where he left off in the first half kicking a 35 yard field goal on the first possession of the second half making the score 36-28 in favor of the Pioneers. After a Storm punt the Pioneers would get a 64 yard scoring run from Logan Kotzian to put Lewis and Clark up 43-28. The struggles would continue for the Storm on the next possession as Hayes would fumble the ball and the Pioneers would recover at the Crown 29. A 29 yard pass play on the first snap after the fumble would give the Pioneers a commanding 50-28 advantage just as the third quarter would come to an end.
Crown freshman running back Tyler Hallblade would score a 2 yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 15 at 50-35 but that would be the last time the Storm would find the end zone on the day as Lewis and Clark would add one more touchdown to put the final score at 57-35.
For the Storm junior wide receiver Robert Yang would finish with 6 catches for 139 yards including a 62 yard touchdown grab in the first quarter.
The Storm now prepare for the annual UMAC Dome day this upcoming Friday October 30th with an early morning 8:00am kick off against MacMurray College.
