Women's Basketball Battles In Conference Play
St. Bonifacius, Minn - The Crown College Women's Basketball team opened the 2009-2010 conference season this past weekend against two teams predicted to finish in the top half of the league.
On Friday night the Storm took on Northland College from Ashland, Wis. and were within 9 with 6 and 1/2 minutes to go in the first half trailing just 20-11 however the Lumber Jills would go on a 11-0 run to end the half taking a commanding 31-11 lead into halftime.
The second half would not see a lead less than 17 as the Lumber Jills would force 35 turnovers on the Storm and hold them to just 25% shooting including holding the Storm to just 9 points in the second half. The final score would be Northland 74 and Crown 20.
The Storm would take on The College of St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon and would lead the Saints 12-11 with 12:29 to go in the first half and would surpass their total points from the previous night with with 5:49 still to play in the first half trailing the Saints 28-21. A late first half run of 17-5 would extend the lead on the Storm to a 45-27 half time deficit but the Storm would shoot 47% from the field in the first half.
The second half would prove to be too much for this young Storm team as the Saints would 19-1 to begin the half and run away with an 87-41 victory.
For the Storm freshman guard Judy Mundt would score 15 points on 6-15 shooting. With the loss the Storm drop to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Storm are back in action this Friday December 11th when they take on Finlandia University from Michigan in non-conference action beginning at 5:30p.m.
